TREATMENT OF SUN DAMAGED SKIN
CARLING LASER CLINIC offers proven treatments to help combat the many symptoms of photo damage (premature aging of the skin due to sun damage). These treatments can improve wrinkles, as well as mottled hyperpigmentation (skin discoloration), depigmentation, lentigines, large pore size and elastosis caused by overexposure to the sun.
What does treatment for wrinkles involve?
Before starting any treatment program, you are advised to consult a medical professional, who will help determine the best treatment method and schedule for your individual situation.
One common treatment for wrinkles is a potent prescription cream medication that contains retinoid. Your prescribing physician will discuss with you the appropriate application schedule for you; however, for optimal results this medicated cream is generally applied by the patient to his or her clean, dry skin once every night.
Can anyone have wrinkle treatment?
You are advised to discuss your individual needs and expected outcomes with your physician before starting any program for the treatment of wrinkles.
How long does the treatment take?
Your physician will discuss with you the appropriate length of treatment for your situation; however, when combined with comprehensive skin protection and sun avoidance programs, cream treatments for wrinkles can take several months.
What can I expect during treatment?
Normal effects of the cream may include temporary skin irritation, including peeling, a slight burning sensation, redness and dryness. These reactions indicate the cream is helping to remove older skin layers through cell turnover. Irritation usually occurs at the beginning of treatment and seldom lasts more than two weeks. A good moisturizing cream may relieve discomfort, or you may discontinue using the cream for a couple of days, until any peeling or drying subsides. If you continue to experience irritation, consult your doctor.
Other aspects of your wrinkle treatment program may include:
- limiting sun exposure;
- wearing a sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher);
- wearing protective clothing;
- watching for unwanted reactions with skin care products that have a high alcohol content or a strong drying effect (e.g., astringents, abrasive soaps, medicated soaps or shampoos, permanent wave solutions);
- avoiding products or processes that may irritate your skin (e.g., hair depilatories, waxes, electrolysis); and
- protecting your face from extreme wind or cold.
dermaDNA™
Skin Cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer and derma DNA™ skin testing can improve the chances of an early diagnosis. If you have had two or more bad sunburns in your life, tan regularly, had a blood relative who was diagnosed with skin cancer or concerned that you may be prematurely showing signs of ageing, you may be a suitable candidate for this test.
This test determines both your genetic risk profile for melanoma, as well as your level of skin damage due to ultraviolet radiation. The test involves one simple swab of your skin and a second swab of the cheek cells inside your mouth. These cells are sent to a specialized DNA testing facility to ultimately determine the quantitative risk of melanoma, and ultraviolet skin damage. This information can serve as a powerful tool for treatment and prevention of future skin damage and cancers.
