 LASER LEG VEIN TREATMENT
Networks of red, blue or purple veins on the legs can develop over time due to a variety of factors. With the use of laser technology, some of these vessels may be treated.
Laser treatment of leg veins is limited to smaller and superficial blood vessels. Larger and deeper vessels are better managed with surgery (vein stripping) and possibly sclerotherapy (injections).
What does laser leg vein treatment involve?
During treatment, a fine laser beam produces wavelengths that pass through the skin and penetrate the targeted vessels. Energy from the laser beam heats up and coagulates blood inside the vessel, causing the vessel walls to collapse and seal.
Treatment takes a few minutes, depending on the number of blood vessels, and it requires no anesthetic.
What are the effects of laser leg vein treatment?
Prior to any treatment, you are advised to meet with a physician to discuss and understand your particular needs and the potential risks and benefits of laser leg vein treatment. During treatment, you may experience a stinging, burning sensation from the laser beam, but no anesthetic is required.
How many treatments will I need?
Depending on the severity of the leg veins being treated, usually multiple treatments are required approximately six weeks apart.
What can I expect after treatment?
The appearance of treated vessels will change dramatically-from blue, to purple, to light red-and some vessels may bulge. Any inflammation you may experience should disappear within a few hours. Redness of the vessels will gradually disappear during the healing process, which generally takes two to six weeks, depending on the severity of the veins treated.
Post-treatment suggestions include wearing support stockings, avoiding medications containing aspirin, elevating your legs and wearing sunscreen on the treated areas. Your physician will discuss these and other possible treatments during your consultation.
