A Brief History of BOTOX®
The first application of Botox® as a medication occurred in the 1960s for treatment of certain neurological disorders. Subsequently, Botox® was finally approved in 1989 by the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) at which time it was indicated for treatment of some eye disorders caused by muscular dysfunction such as uncontrolled excessive blinking and crossed eyes. In 1990, Health Canada approved Botox® for treatment of these overactive eye muscles. Then in 2000, medical indications of Botox® were expanded to include additional disorders characterized by acute muscular contractions in the neck and shoulder areas. As the medical use of Botox® was widened some patients who were treated around the eye area noticed a smoothing effect and softening of fine lines and wrinkles. Physicians discovered that Botox® injections not only treat devastating neurological disorders, but can also dramatically reduce the appearance of wrinkles by relaxing underlying muscles. In 2001 Botox® was first approved by Health Canada for cosmetic treatment of hyperdynamic facial lines.
